Microcement, Polished Plaster & Decorative Finishes FAQs
Whether you're considering microcement for a luxury bathroom renovation, polished plaster for a feature wall, or a bespoke decorative finish for a commercial interior, it's natural to have questions before starting your project.
At Profile Plastering London, we work with homeowners, architects, interior designers, developers and contractors across London, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Essex and the Cotswolds, delivering exceptional microcement, Venetian plaster, polished plaster and Tadelakt finishes.
Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive regarding our decorative surface finishes, installation processes, aftercare and project requirements. If you can't find the information you're looking for, our team will be happy to discuss your project in more detail.
What Is MicroCement?
Microcement is a decorative cement-based coating that creates a seamless, contemporary finish on walls, floors, bathrooms, worktops and furniture. Applied in thin layers and sealed for durability, microcement offers the appearance of concrete without the need for extensive structural work. Its versatility and minimalist aesthetic have made it increasingly popular in luxury residential and commercial interiors throughout London and the South East.
Can microcement be used in bathrooms and wet rooms?
Yes. Microcement is an excellent choice for bathrooms, wet rooms and shower areas. Once correctly installed and sealed, it provides a waterproof, seamless finish with no grout lines, making it both practical and visually striking. We regularly install microcement in luxury bathrooms, wet rooms and spa-inspired interiors.
Is microcement waterproof?
When professionally installed and sealed, microcement is highly water-resistant and suitable for areas exposed to regular moisture, including bathrooms, wet rooms and kitchens. Correct preparation and installation are essential to ensure long-term performance.
Can microcement be applied over existing tiles?
Yes. In many cases, microcement can be applied directly over existing tiles following the correct preparation process. This can significantly reduce disruption, minimise waste and avoid the need for costly tile removal. As microcement is typically only 3-5mm thick, it is an ideal solution for renovation projects.
Is microcement suitable for kitchen worktops?
Absolutely. Microcement is a durable, heat-resistant and water-resistant finish that can be applied to kitchen worktops, islands and other surfaces. It creates a seamless, contemporary appearance and can often be installed over existing worktops, depending on their condition.
How durable is microcement?
Microcement is designed to withstand everyday use in both residential and commercial environments. When correctly installed and maintained, it offers excellent durability while retaining its distinctive decorative appearance. It is suitable for floors, walls, bathrooms, kitchens and commercial interiors.
How long does a microcement installation take?
Project timescales vary depending on the size and complexity of the installation. As microcement is applied in multiple layers, including preparation, coating and sealing stages, most projects take several days to complete. We provide a clear programme of works during the quotation process.
Closed FAQ Item
How Do I clean & Maintain Microcement?
We recommend using pH-neutral cleaning products or warm soapy water to clean microcement surfaces. Avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach, as these can damage protective sealers and potentially cause discolouration. With the correct aftercare, microcement can maintain its appearance for many years.
Does microcement crack?
When installed on a properly prepared and stable substrate, microcement is highly resistant to cracking. Surface preparation is one of the most important stages of any microcement project, which is why we invest significant time ensuring every surface is correctly prepared before application begins.
What is polished plaster?
Polished plaster is a decorative wall finish that creates depth, texture and movement through the use of specialist application techniques. Available in a variety of finishes ranging from subtle matt effects to high-gloss marble-like surfaces, polished plaster is often used to create luxurious feature walls and statement interiors.
What is Venetian plaster?
Venetian plaster is a traditional decorative finish that uses natural lime-based materials to create beautiful textured surfaces. Known for its timeless elegance and depth of character, Venetian plaster is commonly used in high-end residential properties, hotels, restaurants and commercial interiors.
What is Tadelakt?
Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster renowned for its smooth, organic appearance and water-resistant properties. It is particularly popular in bathrooms, wet rooms and wellness spaces where clients are seeking a natural, seamless finish with a luxurious aesthetic.
Do you work with architects and interior designers?
Yes. We regularly collaborate with architects, interior designers, developers and contractors on both residential and commercial projects. We understand the importance of delivering finishes that complement the wider design vision while meeting the highest standards of craftsmanship.
Which areas do you cover?
We regularly undertake projects throughout London, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Essex and the Cotswolds. For larger projects, we are also available to work throughout the UK.
Can I get a quote for a microcement or polished plaster project?
